About gold weight and purity

Gold weight can be estimated from volume and density. Pure 24-karat gold has a commonly used room-temperature density of approximately 19.32 grams per cubic centimeter. This calculator multiplies the entered volume by that density and by the karat fraction. For example, 18-karat gold represents 18 parts gold out of 24, or 75 percent purity, so the simplified density estimate is three quarters of the pure-gold value. Karat is a purity scale and should not be confused with carat, the mass unit used for gemstones. Twenty-four karat indicates nominally pure gold, while 22K, 18K, and 14K contain increasing proportions of alloying metals. Copper, silver, palladium, nickel, and other additions alter color, hardness, workability, and actual density. Because those metals have different densities, scaling pure-gold density by purity is an approximation rather than a precise metallurgical model. Volume may be measured by geometry for a simple solid or by liquid displacement for an irregular item. Jewelry often contains hollow regions, stones, solder, clasps, springs, plating, or non-gold components. Those features must be excluded or modeled separately. Trapped air and surface tension can also affect displacement measurements. A calibrated scale generally provides a more reliable mass than a density estimate when the item can be weighed directly. The value result multiplies estimated grams by the entered price per gram. Enter a price appropriate to the gold purity and purpose of the estimate. Spot-market quotations often refer to fine gold in a troy ounce, while retail jewelry prices and dealer purchase prices include different premiums, labor, refining costs, margins, and assay risk. One troy ounce equals about 31.1035 grams. This calculator does not retrieve live market prices and does not appraise craftsmanship or gemstones.
