About Charles's law
Charles's law describes how the volume of a fixed amount of gas changes with absolute temperature when pressure remains constant. The relationship is directly proportional: warming a gas makes it occupy more volume, while cooling it reduces the volume. The standard equation is V1 divided by T1 equals V2 divided by T2. Rearranging that equation gives V2 = V1 × T2 ÷ T1, which is the calculation performed here.
Temperature must be expressed on an absolute scale before applying the law. Celsius and Fahrenheit values cannot be inserted directly because their zero points do not represent zero molecular thermal energy. This calculator converts either scale to kelvins automatically. A Celsius temperature becomes kelvins by adding 273.15, while Fahrenheit is first converted to Celsius and then to kelvins. The initial and final volume use the same unit, so an input in liters produces a result in liters. The ratio also works for milliliters, cubic meters, or cubic feet if the same volume unit is retained.
The model is useful for balloons, flexible gas containers, laboratory demonstrations, and approximate comparisons of gas behavior. For example, a balloon warmed in sunlight expands because faster-moving molecules require more space to maintain the same pressure. A cooled balloon contracts for the opposite reason. The law assumes the quantity of gas does not change and the container is free to expand or contract enough to keep pressure steady.
Real systems may depart from this ideal relationship. Rigid tanks do not maintain constant pressure, leaking containers do not retain a fixed amount of gas, and gases near condensation or at very high pressure may behave non-ideally. Charles's law should therefore be treated as an ideal-gas estimate rather than a complete engineering model. Always use temperatures above absolute zero, and use measured pressure and a more complete gas equation when pressure changes materially.
