How to calculate a screen ratio
- Enter the display's native horizontal resolution in the width field.
- Enter the native vertical resolution in the height field.
- Optionally enter the viewable diagonal in inches to calculate pixel density.
- Select Calculate ratio and review the reduced ratio, decimal ratio, and diagonal values.
Screen ratio FAQ
What is an aspect ratio?
An aspect ratio compares a screen's width with its height. It describes shape, not physical size or total pixel count.
Why does 3440 by 1440 not reduce to exactly 21:9?
The exact resolution reduces to 43:18, while 21:9 is a convenient marketing label. The two shapes are close but not mathematically identical.
How is PPI calculated?
Diagonal pixels are found with the Pythagorean theorem and divided by diagonal inches. A higher PPI generally produces finer visible detail at the same viewing distance.
Can I enter portrait dimensions?
Yes, portrait dimensions produce the reciprocal of the landscape ratio. The diagonal resolution and pixel density remain unchanged.
Is screen ratio the same as resolution?
No, resolution counts horizontal and vertical pixels while ratio compares their proportions. Many different resolutions can share the same aspect ratio.
