A target of 300 DPI is common for detailed photographs viewed at close range. Large prints viewed from farther away can often use a lower resolution without appearing soft.
Does changing DPI change the number of pixels?
Changing only the DPI metadata does not change the image's pixel count. It changes the intended physical size unless the editing software also resamples the image.
Why is my calculated size different from the paper size?
The image and paper may have different aspect ratios, so they cannot match both width and height without cropping. Printer margins and bleed requirements can also reduce the usable area.
Can I make a larger print by lowering DPI?
Yes, lowering DPI increases the calculated physical dimensions from the same pixels. However, the print contains less detail per inch and may look softer at close viewing distances.
