About frames and timecode

Video and film systems record a sequence of still images called frames. A frame rate states how many frames are presented during one second, while timecode gives every frame a readable address in hours, minutes, seconds, and frames. The common HH:MM:SS:FF notation lets editors, animators, colorists, and broadcast operators communicate an exact point in a program without counting individual images by hand. This calculator converts an absolute frame number into non-drop-frame timecode. It uses the nominal whole-number timecode base associated with the entered rate. At 24 fps, frame numbers run from 00 through 23 before the seconds field advances. At 25 fps they run from 00 through 24, and at 30 fps they run from 00 through 29. The calculator divides the frame count successively into hours, minutes, seconds, and the remaining frame number. Fractional rates such as 23.976 and 29.97 exist because of television engineering history. Their timecode labels normally use nominal bases of 24 and 30 respectively. Non-drop timecode labels every frame sequentially but drifts from wall-clock time because the actual playback rate is slightly slower. Drop-frame timecode, normally written with semicolons for 29.97 or 59.94 fps, periodically skips label numbers to remain aligned with elapsed clock time. It never drops actual video frames. The result here is deliberately non-drop timecode, making it suitable for film, animation, web video, and projects whose editing timeline is configured for non-drop counting. The accompanying decimal duration divides the frame count by the exact entered rate. For fractional rates, this duration may differ slightly from the nominal timecode reading, which is expected rather than an error. Before using a frame address in an edit decision list or delivery document, confirm the project's frame rate, timecode mode, and starting timecode. Professional programs may begin at 01:00:00:00 rather than zero, and source clips can carry embedded offsets. This converter assumes frame zero corresponds to 00:00:00:00 and does not add a source offset. It is a quick, transparent tool for checking durations, animation frames, render ranges, and non-drop timeline positions.
