What is camera field of view?
Field of view is the angular extent of the scene captured by a camera. It depends primarily on sensor size and lens focal length.
Does a longer focal length make the view wider?
No, a longer focal length narrows the angle and magnifies a smaller part of the scene. A shorter focal length includes a wider area.
Which sensor dimensions should I enter?
Use the active imaging width and height from the camera specification. Do not enter the pixel dimensions, because the formula requires physical measurements.
Does crop factor change focal length?
Crop factor does not physically change the lens focal length. It describes how a smaller sensor captures a narrower field of view than a full-frame sensor.
Will the result match a fisheye lens?
Not exactly, because fisheye lenses use a non-rectilinear projection. This calculator is intended for ordinary rectilinear lenses.
