About place value

Place value is the rule that gives a digit its numerical worth according to its position. In the base-ten system, moving one position to the left multiplies a value by ten, while moving one position to the right divides it by ten. The digit 4 therefore means four thousand in 4,257, forty in 42, and four tenths in 0.4. The symbol stays the same, but its position determines the quantity it represents. This calculator reads a standard whole number or decimal from left to right. It identifies the ones position immediately before the decimal point, then names tens, hundreds, thousands, millions, and larger positions as it moves left. To the right it names tenths, hundredths, thousandths, millionths, and other fractional positions. The value column multiplies each digit by the corresponding power of ten. Adding all nonzero values produces expanded form, a representation that makes the contribution of every digit explicit. For example, 4,257 is four thousands, two hundreds, five tens, and seven ones. Its expanded form is 4,000 plus 200 plus 50 plus 7. The decimal 12.34 contains one ten, two ones, three tenths, and four hundredths, so it expands to 10 plus 2 plus 0.3 plus 0.04. A zero digit still owns a place even though its contribution to expanded form is zero. In 5,007, the zeros show that there are no hundreds or tens; removing them would change the number completely. Place value supports nearly every elementary arithmetic skill. Regrouping in addition and subtraction depends on trading ten units of one place for one unit of the next place. Multiplication shifts partial products by place, division distributes quantities among positions, and rounding examines the digit immediately to the right of the target place. Decimal comparisons also become easier when positions are aligned: three tenths is greater than twenty-nine hundredths because 0.30 exceeds 0.29. What is the difference between place and value?

Place names a digit's position, such as hundreds or tenths. Value is the amount represented by the digit in that position, such as 300 or 0.3.

Why are zeros important in a number?

A zero acts as a placeholder that keeps other digits in their correct positions. Removing a middle zero can change every digit to its left or right into a different value.

How does place value work after the decimal point?

Each step to the right divides the previous place by ten. The first position is tenths, followed by hundredths, thousandths, and progressively smaller powers of ten.

What is expanded form?
