How soon does the body recover after quitting?
Some cardiovascular and carbon-monoxide changes begin within hours or days. Lung symptoms and disease risks generally improve over months and years, with substantial individual variation.
Is the recovery percentage a medical risk score?
No. It is an educational composite based on elapsed time, smoking intensity, duration, and age, not a validated prediction of lung healing or disease.
Why can coughing increase after quitting?
Airway cilia can resume moving mucus as exposure stops, temporarily making coughing more noticeable. Persistent, severe, bloody, or otherwise concerning cough should be assessed by a clinician.
Does a lapse reset all health progress?
