About the reverse due date calculator
A pregnancy due date is conventionally calculated as 280 days (40 weeks) from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP), based on a standard 28-day menstrual cycle with ovulation on day 14. The reverse due date calculator works backwards from a known due date to reconstruct the pregnancy timeline — giving you the estimated conception date, LMP date, ovulation date, implantation date, and key trimester milestones.
The most important input is your average menstrual cycle length, because ovulation timing varies with cycle length. For a standard 28-day cycle, ovulation occurs on day 14, and the LMP is simply the due date minus 280 days. If your cycle is longer — say, 35 days — ovulation occurs on day 21 instead of day 14, meaning the LMP is seven days earlier than the standard formula would suggest. The calculator adjusts all dates accordingly using the formula: LMP = Due Date − (252 + cycle length).
Once the LMP is known, all other dates follow from it. The ovulation date is LMP plus (cycle length − 14), placing it in the fertile window around mid-cycle. The conception date is typically the same as or within one to two days of ovulation, since sperm can survive up to five days and the egg is viable for about 24 hours. Implantation follows approximately six to twelve days after conception, with eight days being the most common.
Pregnancy milestones in the result panel are based on gestational age measured from the LMP. The first trimester ends at 13 weeks (91 days from LMP). The second trimester ends at 28 weeks (196 days). Fetal viability — the point at which survival outside the womb becomes possible with medical support — is generally reached at 24 weeks (168 days). These dates are estimates; your healthcare provider may use ultrasound measurements to refine gestational age.
The optional Current Gestational Age fields allow the calculator to display how many weeks remain until the due date, which is useful for tracking progress mid-pregnancy. If you leave those fields blank, the calculator simply shows the milestone dates without a remaining-weeks figure.
All calculations use the Gregorian calendar and assume a singleton pregnancy. Twin and higher-order pregnancies typically deliver earlier than 40 weeks and may have a different expected due date from the outset. Always verify your dates with a qualified healthcare provider or midwife, as individual variation in ovulation timing and cycle regularity means that calendar-based dates are estimates, not certainties.
Reverse due date calculator examples
Three illustrative cases showing how the calculator reconstructs pregnancy dates from a known due date.
| Due Date & Cycle | Estimated Conception | Key Date |
|---|---|---|
| Due date 15 Sep 2024, 28-day cycle (Find Conception Date) | ~24 Dec 2023 | LMP ≈ Dec 10, 2023 (280 days before due date). Ovulation and conception ≈ Dec 24, 2023 (LMP + 14 days). |
| Due date 20 Oct 2024, 28-day cycle (Find LMP Date) | LMP ≈ 14 Jan 2024 | LMP = due date − 280 days = Oct 20 − 280 days. This is the first day of the last period before conception. |
| Due date 10 Nov 2024, 35-day cycle (Find Conception Date) | ~18 Feb 2024 | Adjusted for 35-day cycle: LMP = due date − 287 days = Jan 28, 2024. Ovulation and conception ≈ LMP + 21 days = Feb 18, 2024. |
| Due date 5 Dec 2024, 28-day cycle, 24 weeks 2 days along (Milestones) | LMP ≈ 29 Feb 2024 | Dec 5 minus 280 days = Feb 29, 2024 (valid since 2024 is a leap year). With gestational age entered, the calculator also shows how many weeks remain. |
How to use the reverse due date calculator
- Enter your expected due date in the date field.
- Select a calculation method: Find Conception Date to see when you likely conceived, Find LMP Date to see your last period, or Pregnancy Milestones for a full timeline.
- Enter your average cycle length (21–45 days). If unsure, leave it at the default of 28 days.
- Optionally enter your current gestational age in weeks and days to see how many weeks remain until your due date.
- Click Calculate to see your personalized pregnancy timeline, then share or bookmark the result for reference.
Reverse due date calculator FAQ
How accurate is the estimated conception date?
The conception date is an estimate based on average ovulation timing within your cycle. Because sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to five days and the egg is viable for about 24 hours, the actual conception window spans several days around the calculated date. An ultrasound performed in the first trimester provides the most accurate gestational age and can refine all derived dates.
What is the LMP date and why does it matter?
The LMP (Last Menstrual Period) date is the first day of your last period before pregnancy. It is the standard reference point used by healthcare providers to calculate gestational age and due dates. Because the exact date of conception is rarely known, gestational age is measured from the LMP, making it about two weeks longer than the time since fertilisation.
How does cycle length affect the results?
In a standard 28-day cycle, ovulation occurs around day 14. If your cycle is longer — say, 35 days — ovulation shifts to around day 21, meaning your LMP was about seven days earlier than the standard calculation suggests. Entering your actual cycle length lets the calculator adjust all dates accordingly, giving you more personalised results.
What is the viability date?
Fetal viability refers to the gestational age at which a baby can survive outside the womb with medical support. This threshold is generally recognised as 24 weeks of gestational age. The calculator marks this milestone on your pregnancy timeline, though survival rates and developmental outcomes continue to improve with each additional week of gestation.
Can this calculator tell me my due date?
This tool reverses the calculation — it starts from a known due date and works backwards. If you want to calculate a due date from your LMP or conception date, use a standard due date or conception calculator instead. Together, the two tools cover both directions of the pregnancy timeline calculation.
Should I rely on this calculator for medical decisions?
No. This calculator provides estimates based on standard obstetric formulas and your inputted cycle length. Individual variation in ovulation timing, irregular cycles, and other factors can shift actual dates. Always discuss your pregnancy timeline with your doctor, midwife, or obstetrician, who can confirm gestational age with clinical assessment and ultrasound measurements.
