About flange sizing

A flange is a widened rim or collar that helps a device meet, support, seal, or distribute force around another surface. In healthcare, flanges appear in breast pumps, ostomy products, prosthetic interfaces, respiratory equipment, and other fitted devices. Correct dimensions matter because a flange that is too small may rub, constrict, or concentrate pressure, while one that is too large may reduce stability, admit excess tissue, leak, or transfer force poorly. This calculator starts with circumference because a flexible tape can often measure a rounded fitting location more consistently than a ruler can measure diameter. It converts circumference to diameter using diameter equals circumference divided by pi. It then multiplies that measured diameter by the chosen clearance factor: 1.05 for a snug five-percent allowance, 1.10 for a standard ten-percent allowance, or 1.15 for a generous fifteen-percent allowance. Results are rounded to two decimal places. The calculation is purely geometric. Real products may use nominal sizes, tapered openings, oval shapes, wall thickness, compressible materials, pressure classes, or proprietary measurement rules. A manufacturer may instruct the user to measure a nipple diameter rather than circumference, measure a stoma at a particular time, or account for swelling and movement. Those instructions take priority over this general estimate. Never alter a prescribed medical device solely from an online result. For a useful measurement, use the same posture and loading condition expected during use. Keep the tape level, avoid pulling it tight enough to compress soft tissue, and repeat the measurement two or three times. If readings vary, investigate the cause rather than simply averaging large differences. Record whether the measurement is in centimeters or millimeters and compare the calculated diameter with the exact units on the product chart. Comfort and function must be checked after sizing. Warning signs include pain, blanching, numbness, swelling, skin damage, restricted movement, leakage, poor suction, or unstable attachment. Stop using an ill-fitting device and contact the manufacturer or an appropriately qualified clinician, lactation professional, prosthetist, or equipment specialist.
