About fish oil dosage

Fish oil supplements commonly provide the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. These fats participate in cell membranes and signaling pathways and are widely studied in cardiovascular, inflammatory, neurological, and pregnancy-related contexts. A front label may advertise 1,000 milligrams of fish oil while the supplement facts panel lists only 300 milligrams of EPA plus DHA. The active EPA and DHA amounts, rather than total oil weight, are the useful numbers for comparing products. This calculator uses simple goal-based combined EPA and DHA reference amounts. General wellness and pregnancy are represented by 500 milligrams per day, heart-health planning by 1,000 milligrams, and clinician-managed triglyceride treatment by 3,000 milligrams. These are educational planning values, not prescriptions. Recommendations vary among professional organizations, countries, diets, diagnoses, and products. Pregnancy guidance may emphasize DHA specifically, while prescription omega-3 formulations for triglycerides differ from ordinary supplements. The capsule calculation adds EPA and DHA shown for one capsule, divides the selected target by that sum, and rounds upward to a whole capsule. Rounding up means the supplied amount can exceed the target. Confirm whether the label values apply to one capsule or to a serving of two or more capsules before entering them. Concentrated products may deliver much more EPA and DHA per capsule than standard softgels. Age and weight are collected to make the profile explicit, but this adult educational calculator does not scale the target by body weight. Pediatric dosing should be determined by a qualified clinician. People taking anticoagulants or antiplatelet medicines, those with bleeding disorders, seafood allergies, planned surgery, heart rhythm concerns, pregnancy, or chronic disease should seek individual advice before supplementation. Food can also provide omega-3 fats. Salmon, sardines, trout, herring, and other oily fish contribute EPA and DHA along with protein and micronutrients. Supplements can cause fishy aftertaste, reflux, or gastrointestinal upset and may vary in purity and oxidation control. Choose a reputable product, follow storage instructions, and never use this calculator to replace prescribed lipid treatment. The result is best used to understand a label and prepare an informed discussion with a pharmacist, dietitian, or physician.

Fish oil calculator FAQ

Is total fish oil the same as EPA plus DHA?

No. Total fish oil includes other fats, so it is often much larger than the EPA and DHA amount. Use the separate EPA and DHA lines on the supplement facts panel.

Why does the calculator round capsules up?

Capsules generally cannot be divided accurately. Rounding up reaches the selected reference amount, but the displayed supplied dose may be higher.

Can fish oil lower triglycerides?

Prescription-strength omega-3 products can lower triglycerides at medically supervised doses. Ordinary supplements should not replace evaluation or prescribed treatment.

Is fish oil safe with blood thinners?

Omega-3 supplements can affect bleeding risk, especially at high doses or with certain medicines. Ask the prescribing clinician or pharmacist before combining them.

Does body weight determine the adult dose?

Most broad adult omega-3 guidance is not directly weight-based. The calculator records weight for context but uses the selected goal to set its educational target.
