About birth weight percentiles

Birth weight percentile describes where a newborn's weight falls compared with a reference population of babies born at the same gestational age and of the same sex. A result near the 50th percentile is close to the reference median. A result at the 10th percentile means about ten percent of comparable newborns weighed the same or less, while about ninety percent weighed more. Percentiles describe relative position; they are not percentages of an ideal weight and do not diagnose a medical condition. This calculator converts the entered weight to kilograms, estimates the median weight for the selected gestational age and sex, and uses a normal-distribution approximation around that median. Values between whole gestational weeks are interpolated so a value such as 38.5 weeks does not jump abruptly between two reference points. The resulting estimate is grouped into the familiar clinical screening bands: below the 10th percentile is small for gestational age, the 10th through 90th percentile is appropriate for gestational age, and above the 90th percentile is large for gestational age. Gestational age has a major effect on expected birth weight. A healthy baby born several weeks early naturally weighs less than most full-term babies, so comparison with all newborns would be misleading. Sex-specific references also account for the modest average difference between male and female birth weights. Accurate dating and an accurately measured weight are therefore important. Enter completed weeks plus a decimal fraction when known, and use the weight recorded soon after delivery before normal early fluid changes alter it. Population standards differ by country, ancestry, altitude, plurality, and the method used to establish gestational age. Customized charts may also consider maternal size, parity, and fetal sex. The estimate here is intentionally transparent and useful for education, but a hospital may report a somewhat different percentile from its approved chart. Twins and higher-order multiples also follow different growth patterns and should be assessed with an appropriate reference. A low or high percentile is a reason to consider the complete clinical picture rather than a conclusion by itself. Clinicians may review pregnancy history, placental function, glucose status, feeding, temperature, blood sugar, and the baby's physical examination. Trend data from prenatal ultrasound and measurements after birth can add context. Always discuss concerns about fetal growth, prematurity, or newborn health with an obstetric, neonatal, or pediatric professional.

What is a normal birth weight percentile?

Why does gestational age change the result?

Expected weight rises rapidly during the final weeks of pregnancy. Comparing a preterm baby only with babies born at a similar gestational age provides a more meaningful result.

Does the calculator work for twins?

Is a low percentile always caused by growth restriction?

Can hospital results differ from this estimate?
