Birth weight percentile FAQ
What is a normal birth weight percentile?
The 10th through 90th percentile is commonly described as appropriate for gestational age. A percentile outside that range is a screening finding, not a diagnosis by itself.
Why does gestational age change the result?
Expected weight rises rapidly during the final weeks of pregnancy. Comparing a preterm baby only with babies born at a similar gestational age provides a more meaningful result.
Does the calculator work for twins?
This estimate uses singleton-style reference values and may not be appropriate for twins or higher-order multiples. A clinician can use a chart designed for the pregnancy and local population.
Is a low percentile always caused by growth restriction?
No, some constitutionally small babies are healthy and some growth-restricted babies may remain above the 10th percentile. Clinical history, prenatal growth trends, and newborn assessment help distinguish these situations.
Can hospital results differ from this estimate?
Yes, hospitals may use INTERGROWTH, Fenton, national, or customized growth references with different underlying populations. Small differences are expected, especially near a category threshold.
