About alcohol units and standard drinks

An alcohol unit calculator translates drink size and alcohol by volume into measures that are easier to compare. Beverage labels show alcohol by volume, commonly abbreviated ABV, but a large weak drink can contain as much alcohol as a smaller strong drink. This calculator first multiplies volume by ABV to find milliliters of pure ethanol. Ten milliliters of ethanol equals one UK alcohol unit. Because ethanol has a density of about 0.789 grams per milliliter, the same amount can also be expressed in grams. This tool defines one standard drink as 14 grams of pure alcohol, the convention used in United States public-health guidance. The estimated blood alcohol concentration uses a simplified Widmark relationship. It divides alcohol grams by body weight and a distribution factor, then subtracts an average elimination rate for elapsed time. The distribution factors used here are broad estimates based on biological sex. Real BAC varies with food, drinking speed, medicines, body composition, liver function, age, and individual metabolism. Absorption also continues after the final drink, so a calculated value can fall while a person's measured BAC is still rising. Only a properly calibrated breath or blood test can measure BAC. Use the result to understand alcohol quantity, not to certify fitness to drive. Add together the volume of servings only when they have the same ABV; otherwise calculate each beverage separately and sum its units or standard drinks. A typical 500 mL beer at 5 percent ABV contains 2.5 UK units, while a 150 mL wine at 12 percent contains 1.8 units. Cocktail strength is often uncertain because pours and recipes differ. Health guidance differs by country and personal circumstance. Pregnancy, liver disease, medication interactions, prior alcohol dependence, and some medical conditions may make avoiding alcohol the safest choice. What is one alcohol unit?

Why does elapsed time reduce estimated BAC?

The model assumes alcohol is eliminated at an average rate of 0.015 percentage points per hour. Actual elimination varies and absorption may still be occurring.
