About this calculator

A mutual fund calculator estimates how an initial investment and regular monthly contributions may grow after fund costs, front-end loads, dividend income, and tax on dividends. Enter the amount invested today, monthly contribution, investment period, expected annual return, expense ratio, load fee, dividend yield, and tax rate. The results present a projected fund value, total contributions, estimated gain, and net annual return. This makes the tool useful for comparing low-cost index funds with higher-fee products, planning a savings target, or explaining how recurring contributions compound over time. The calculator first reduces the initial investment by the load fee: initial net investment = initial amount × (1 − load fee). Its net annual return equals expected annual return minus the expense ratio plus dividend yield after dividend tax. That annual return is divided by 12 to obtain a monthly rate. Future value combines compounded initial capital with the future value of an ordinary monthly contribution stream: FV = initial net investment × (1 + r)^n + contribution × ((1 + r)^n − 1) ÷ r. When r is zero, the contribution portion is simply contribution × n. Total contributions include the full original investment and every scheduled monthly deposit, while investment gain is projected value minus that gross contributed amount. A positive dividend yield increases the model only by the portion assumed retained after tax; the calculator does not reinvest a separate tax refund or model capital-gains taxes. Expense ratio is treated as an annual drag on return. The output is nominal and assumes a constant monthly rate, regular end-of-month contributions, and reinvestment of the modeled return. Use conservative return assumptions and compare several expense and load combinations; even small annual fee differences can compound materially over long periods. Actual fund returns fluctuate, dividend distributions vary, taxes depend on account and jurisdiction, and a fund’s prospectus may charge additional fees. This educational estimate is not a guarantee or investment recommendation. Review the fund’s current prospectus, account tax treatment, risk profile, and investment objectives before buying.

Frequently asked questions

Are the results exact?

The arithmetic is exact for the values entered, but real outcomes can differ because rates, fees, timing, and rules may change.

Can I use this for planning?

Yes. Use it for estimates and scenario comparisons, then verify important decisions with current documents or a qualified professional.

What should I enter for optional fields?

Leave an optional field blank when it does not apply. The calculator treats a blank optional amount as zero.

Why does a result change after one input changes?

Many financial measures depend on linked assumptions, so changing one input can affect every related result.
