About retail margin and sales tax

A margin and sales tax calculator separates two questions retailers often mix together: how profitable is the pre-tax price, and what will the customer pay after sales tax? Gross margin is a seller metric. Sales tax is usually a pass-through collected for a jurisdiction, not extra profit. If you raise the shelf price to “cover tax,” you have changed margin as well as the receipt total. The margin and sales tax calculator measures profit margin on the pre-tax sale price: (sale price − cost) ÷ sale price × 100. Sales tax equals sale price times the tax rate divided by 100. Customer price including tax is sale price plus that tax. A $100 price, $60 cost, and 8% tax produce a 40% margin, $8.00 of tax, and a $108.00 total. Margin does not use the $108 figure, because tax is not revenue you keep. U.S. sales tax is destination- or origin-based depending on the state, and combined state-plus-local rates can differ by zip code. The tax rate field is a single percentage you choose. It does not look up nexus, marketplace-facilitator rules, or product exemptions. Groceries, clothing, and digital goods can be taxed differently from a general merchandise rate. Pricing displays also differ. Some shops show tax-exclusive prices and add tax at checkout; others advertise tax-inclusive totals. This calculator starts from a tax-exclusive sale price. If your advertised number already includes tax, back out the pre-tax price first (inclusive ÷ (1 + rate)) before entering it, or the margin will be understated and tax will be applied twice in spirit. Use the margin and sales tax calculator to quote a $100 item at 8%, a $50 item at 5%, or a no-tax 0% control. Confirm the rate with the jurisdiction where the sale is sourced, and keep cost on the same unit as price. Shipping, coupons, and mixed baskets can change the taxable base in ways this single-line model does not capture.

Margin = (sale price − cost) ÷ sale price × 100; sales tax = sale price × (tax rate ÷ 100); customer total = sale price + sales tax.

Margin and sales tax examples

These worked examples use the same pre-tax margin and add-on sales tax formulas as the calculator.

InputOutputNote
$100 price; $60 cost; 8% tax$108.00Margin is 40.00% on the $100 pre-tax price, sales tax is $8.00, and the customer total is $108.00.
$50 price; $30 cost; 5% tax$52.50Margin remains 40.00% on the pre-tax $50; 5% tax adds $2.50 for a $52.50 receipt.
$200 price; $150 cost; 0% tax$200.00A 25.00% margin with no sales tax leaves the customer price equal to the $200 pre-tax amount.

How to calculate margin with sales tax

  1. Enter Sale Price Before Tax, the amount you keep as revenue before sales tax is added.
  2. Enter Product Cost for the same unit so profit margin is measured on the pre-tax price.
  3. Enter Sales Tax Rate (%) as a combined local rate, or 0 if the sale is exempt.
  4. Select Calculate to see profit margin, sales tax, and customer price including tax.

Margin and sales tax calculator FAQ

Is profit margin calculated before or after sales tax?

Margin uses the pre-tax sale price minus cost. Sales tax is added on top for the customer total and is not treated as extra profit, which is why an 8% tax on $100 does not change the 40% margin on a $60 cost.

Should I enter a tax-inclusive shelf price?

No. Sale Price Before Tax should be the exclusive amount. If a ticket already includes tax, divide it by (1 + tax rate as a decimal) to recover the exclusive price first, or tax will be layered onto an already-taxed number.

Can I enter a combined city and state rate?

Yes. Enter the total percentage you will charge, such as 8.25 for a combined rate. The margin and sales tax calculator applies one rate and does not split state versus local tax on the receipt.

Does a 0% tax rate mean the product is exempt?

It means the calculator will not add tax. Whether the product is legally exempt depends on jurisdiction and product type. Use 0 to model an exempt or tax-free holiday case, then confirm the rule with local guidance.

Are discounts and shipping included?

No. The taxable base is the pre-tax sale price you type. Coupons, shipping, and mixed carts can change the amount subject to tax, so treat the result as a single-line estimate rather than a full POS ticket.
