About the Lottery Annuity Calculator
A lottery jackpot advertised as an annuity is the present value of a stream of payments, not a pile of cash sitting in an account. Winners choosing the annuity need a payment estimate after tax and a sense of what the last check is worth in today's dollars. The lottery annuity calculator treats the jackpot as the present value of an ordinary annuity, solves for the level gross payment at the advertised rate and frequency, applies a flat tax rate, and then deflates the after-tax payment by inflation over the full term to illustrate purchasing power at the end.
The periodic rate i is the annual rate divided by payments per year. The number of payments n is years times frequency. Gross periodic payment is jackpot times i divided by one minus (1+i) to the power minus n, the standard annuity-payment identity. After-tax payment multiplies by one minus the tax rate. Total after-tax proceeds are that payment times n. The inflation-adjusted final payment divides the after-tax payment by (1 + inflation) to the power of the annuity years, which is a snapshot of the last check in year-zero dollars, not a full real-NPV of the stream.
Use the lottery annuity calculator to compare a 30-year monthly annuity with an annual-pay structure, to see how a 37 percent tax rate shrinks each check, and to remember that a payment decades out is smaller in real terms. Lottery rules often escalate payments rather than paying a level amount; this page uses a level annuity so the math stays transparent. Cash-option lump sums are a different present-value problem and are not computed here.
Tax is a single effective rate, not a complete federal-plus-state withholding schedule, and it is applied to every payment equally. Actual withholding, estimated taxes, and investment of payments after receipt will differ. The advertised rate on a jackpot is a marketing and present-value convention, not your personal return if you invested a lump sum. Payments per year should be 12 for monthly, 1 for annual, 4 for quarterly, or 2 for semiannual.
This is an educational illustration, not tax advice or an official lottery quote. Confirm the cash versus annuity amounts, escalation schedule, and tax withholding with the lottery and a tax professional before you choose. Re-run when the published rate or your assumed tax rate changes.
Lottery Annuity Examples
Jackpots are treated as the present value of a level annuity; tax and inflation are applied after the gross payment is solved.
| Scenario | Output | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| $50,000,000 jackpot, 30 years, 3.5% rate, 37% tax, 2.5% inflation, 12 payments/year | $224,522.34 gross; $141,449.08 after tax; $50,921,667.60 total after tax; $67,434.81 real final payment | Monthly checks look large, but tax and 30 years of inflation shrink the last payment sharply in real terms. |
| $10,000,000 jackpot, 20 years, 4% rate, 24% tax, 2% inflation, 1 payment/year | $735,817.50 gross; $559,221.30 after tax; $11,184,426.05 total after tax; $376,339.91 real final payment | An annual-pay structure at a lower tax rate still leaves the last check worth far less in today's dollars. |
| $250,000,000 jackpot, 30 years, 3% rate, 37% tax, 3% inflation, 12 payments/year | $1,054,010.08 gross; $664,026.35 after tax; $239,049,487.12 total after tax; $273,570.07 real final payment | A headline nine-figure annuity is much smaller per month after tax, and inflation matches the rate in this case. |
How to Calculate Lottery Annuity Payments
- Enter the advertised jackpot as the present value of the annuity.
- Add the number of years, the annual rate used to size payments, and payments per year (12 for monthly).
- Enter an effective tax rate and an inflation rate for the real last payment.
- Calculate gross and after-tax payments, total after-tax proceeds, and the deflated final check.
- Lower the rate or raise tax to see how official quotes can differ from take-home cash.
Lottery Annuity Calculator FAQ
Is the jackpot the cash option?
No. Enter the annuity jackpot as present value of the payment stream. The cash option is a different discounted lump sum published by the lottery.
Do real lotteries pay a level amount?
Many escalate payments over time. The lottery annuity calculator uses a level payment so you can audit the annuity formula; an escalating quote will not match dollar for dollar.
What tax rate should I enter?
An effective combined rate is a starting point. Withholding, state tax, and deductions will differ. This is not a substitute for a tax professional.
What does inflation-adjusted final payment mean?
It is the last after-tax payment expressed in today's dollars, not the present value of every payment. It shows purchasing-power erosion on the distant check.
Which number do I enter for payments per year?
Use 12 for monthly, 4 for quarterly, 2 for semiannual, or 1 for annual. The default in the form is 12.
