About the Insurance Loss Ratio Calculator

The loss ratio is the core claims-performance statistic in property-casualty and health insurance: how many cents of the earned premium dollar are consumed by losses. Underwriters, MGAs, and finance teams watch it against a pricing target and against a combined ratio that also includes expenses. The insurance loss ratio calculator reports a gross loss ratio, a loss ratio that folds in loss-adjustment expenses, a net ratio after reinsurance recoveries, and the gap versus an optional target. Gross loss ratio is incurred losses divided by earned premiums. The LAE-inclusive ratio adds loss-adjustment expenses in the numerator. Target variance is the gross loss ratio minus the target you typed, so a positive variance means claims are running hotter than plan. Optional fields are treated as zero when blank. Premiums must be positive; a book with no earned premium cannot form a ratio. Incurred losses should match the definition you use internally, typically paid losses plus reserve change for the accident or calendar period aligned with earned premium. Mixing written premium with incurred losses will distort the ratio. Catastrophe loads, reinstatement premiums, and sliding-scale commissions are not modeled. Target variance uses the gross ratio, not the net ratio, so a reinsurance-heavy year can look off-plan on variance even when net is healthy. This is an educational ratio, not a statutory blank or an actuarial opinion. Different lines have different acceptable ranges; a 55 percent homeowners year is not comparable to a 90 percent health year without context. Reconcile inputs to the exhibit you will show a reinsurer or a board, and re-run when reserves develop.

Should I use written or earned premium?
Use earned premium. The loss ratio matches claims for the period with the premium that was earned in that period, not with premium written.
What is LAE?
Loss-adjustment expenses are the costs of investigating and settling claims. Including them shows a broader claims burden than pure losses alone.
Is this a combined ratio?
No. A combined ratio also adds underwriting expense to premium. The insurance loss ratio calculator stays on the claims side of the equation.
Why can net be lower than gross?
Reinsurance recoveries reduce the numerator. If recoveries are large relative to LAE, the net loss ratio falls below the gross ratio.
What does a negative target variance mean?
The gross loss ratio is below the target, which is better than plan on this definition. Variance is ratio minus target, not the other way around.
