About the GMROI Calculator
Gross margin return on inventory investment, abbreviated GMROI, estimates how many gross-margin dollars a retailer generates for each dollar tied up in average inventory. The GMROI calculator subtracts cost of goods sold from net sales to obtain gross profit, averages beginning and ending inventory, then divides gross profit by that average. A GMROI of 1.50 means the period generated $1.50 of gross profit for every $1.00 of average inventory under the entered valuation basis. It is a ratio, not a percentage.
Keep the numerator and denominator consistent. Many retailers calculate GMROI using inventory at cost because cost of goods sold is also measured at cost. Using retail-value inventory against a cost-based gross margin distorts the ratio. Net sales should be after returns and discounts and should cover the same dates as cost of goods sold. Beginning and ending inventory are a simple average; when inventory changes sharply or seasonally, average monthly or weekly balances provide a more representative denominator.
GMROI combines margin and inventory productivity. A product can earn a high percentage margin but produce a weak GMROI if it sells slowly and occupies capital for a long time. A lower-margin item can produce a strong GMROI through rapid turnover. The ratio should therefore be reviewed with inventory turnover, sell-through, stockouts, markdowns, carrying cost, lead time, and contribution margin. Negative gross profit produces a negative GMROI, while zero average inventory makes the calculation undefined.
Comparisons are most useful across similar categories, stores, channels, and periods. Jewelry, groceries, seasonal apparel, and spare parts have different margin structures and service-level requirements, so one universal target is inappropriate. A high result caused by extremely lean stock may also conceal missed sales. Use several periods and investigate changes in price, mix, purchasing terms, shrinkage, and obsolete stock. The GMROI calculator is suitable for quick retail scenarios and formula checks. It does not value inventory, allocate overhead, forecast demand, or recommend a purchasing level. Is GMROI a percentage?
It is normally expressed as a ratio, such as 1.50 gross-margin dollars per inventory dollar. Multiplying by 100 is optional and should be labeled clearly if you do it.
Should inventory be at cost or retail?
Use a basis consistent with the numerator. Cost inventory is common when gross profit is derived from cost-based COGS.
Is higher GMROI always better?
Not automatically. Very low stock can increase the ratio while causing stockouts and missed sales. Compare similar categories and service levels.
Why average beginning and ending inventory?
A simple average better represents capital held during the period than either endpoint alone. It still misses intra-period peaks, so seasonal businesses may need more frequent inventory observations.
