About the Futures Contracts Calculator

A futures contract is an agreement to buy or sell a standardized quantity of an asset at a specified price and future date. The futures contracts calculator compares the quoted futures price with a cost-of-carry estimate derived from the current spot price. The model compounds the risk-free financing rate, storage cost, and convenience yield continuously over the remaining fraction of a year. Storage raises the theoretical price because carrying a physical commodity has a cost, while convenience yield lowers it because holding the physical asset can provide operational value. For financial futures, storage and convenience yield are often zero or represented by an income yield instead. The market basis shown here is the quoted futures price minus the spot price. Market conventions sometimes define basis in the opposite direction, so always confirm the convention used by an exchange, broker, or risk report. Basis normally converges toward zero as expiration approaches, although delivery frictions, grade differences, interest rates, and temporary supply constraints can affect that path. A quoted price above the theoretical result does not automatically create a risk-free trade: transaction costs, bid-ask spreads, financing access, margin calls, taxes, and delivery rules can remove an apparent arbitrage opportunity. Contract value equals the futures quote multiplied by contract size and number of contracts. It is not the cash paid upfront. Futures are leveraged instruments, and traders generally post initial and variation margin rather than paying the full notional amount. Profit or loss for the long position is calculated from the entered price to the current futures price. A short position has the opposite sign. The estimate excludes commissions, exchange fees, daily settlement timing, currency conversion, and any multiplier rules not captured by contract size. What is convenience yield?
Convenience yield represents the noncash benefit of holding a physical commodity, such as avoiding a production shortage. It reduces modeled futures value because owning the physical inventory can be operationally useful.
Is contract value the required margin?
No. Contract value is notional exposure, not cash posted with a broker. Required margin is set by the exchange and broker and may change with volatility.
How do I calculate a short position?
Reverse the profit-or-loss sign shown for a long position. A short position gains when the current futures price is below its entry price and loses when the price rises.
Why can quoted and theoretical prices differ?
Market expectations, transaction costs, delivery options, liquidity, and imperfect carry inputs can all create differences. Treat the theoretical price as a benchmark, not an automatic arbitrage signal.
