About the Fixed Deposit Calculator
A fixed deposit calculator estimates the maturity value of a lump-sum bank deposit earning a stated rate for a fixed tenure. Fixed deposits are also called term deposits in many markets. The depositor commits principal for an agreed period, and the institution credits interest according to the product’s compounding schedule. The fixed deposit calculator translates the quoted annual rate into interest earned, effective annual return, maturity proceeds, and an optional post-tax estimate.
The compound-interest formula is principal multiplied by (1 + annual rate divided by compounding frequency) raised to the number of compounding periods across the tenure. Annual compounding uses one period per year, semi-annual uses two, quarterly uses four, monthly uses twelve, and daily uses 365. The effective annual rate shows the one-year yield after intra-year compounding, which can be slightly higher than the nominal quote.
Tax is applied only to the interest in this simplified model. Post-tax interest equals total interest multiplied by one minus the entered tax rate, and post-tax amount adds that net interest back to principal. Actual tax treatment can differ: institutions may deduct tax at source, tax liability may depend on total income, and special products may qualify for deductions or lock-in rules. The output therefore illustrates tax impact rather than preparing a return.
Use the calculator to compare tenures, renewal rates, compounding frequencies, and deposit offers. Confirm whether a bank quotes simple or compound interest and whether interest is paid out periodically or reinvested. A payout deposit does not compound the same way as a cumulative deposit. Also review premature-withdrawal penalties, deposit insurance limits, minimum balances, senior-citizen rates, nomination rules, and liquidity needs before locking in funds.
The projection assumes a constant rate and uninterrupted deposit through maturity. It does not model rate resets, additional contributions, early withdrawal, bank-specific day-count conventions, or reinvestment of periodic payouts. Rounding by the institution can create small differences. Inflation also reduces purchasing power even when the rupee balance rises. Compare after-tax effective returns with other low-risk choices and verify the final schedule in the product disclosure before investing.

What is the maturity amount?
It is the original principal plus accumulated compound interest at the end of the entered tenure, before any withdrawal penalty. Banks may round or apply product-specific day-count rules that differ by a few rupees.
Why is the effective rate higher than the quoted rate?
With more than one compounding period per year, credited interest earns additional interest during that same year. The effective annual rate isolates that compounding effect so two quoted rates can be compared on one basis.
Does the calculator handle monthly interest payouts?
No. It models a cumulative deposit where interest remains invested. A payout product needs a simple cash-flow and reinvestment analysis.
Is post-tax interest exact?
No. It applies one tax percentage to gross interest. Deductions, tax brackets, withholding, exemptions, and filing rules can change actual liability.
What happens if the deposit is withdrawn early?
Banks may reduce the applicable rate or charge a penalty. This maturity projection assumes the deposit remains in place for the entire tenure.
