What is the torque to horsepower formula?
For pound-feet, multiply torque by RPM and divide by 5,252. The result is mechanical horsepower at that operating point.
Why is RPM required?
Torque alone measures twisting force, not the rate of work. RPM supplies the rotational speed needed to determine power.
Why do torque and horsepower cross at 5,252 RPM?
At approximately 5,252 RPM, the conversion factor makes pound-feet of torque numerically equal to horsepower. This applies only when those particular units are plotted.
How are newton-meters handled?
The calculator multiplies newton-meters by 0.7375621493 to obtain pound-feet. It then applies the standard torque, RPM, and horsepower relationship.
Is calculated engine power the same as wheel power?
Not necessarily, because drivetrain components consume some power before it reaches the wheels. Wheel horsepower measured on a chassis dynamometer is therefore commonly lower than crankshaft horsepower.
