Celsius defines water's freezing point as 0 degrees and boiling point as 100 degrees at standard atmospheric pressure. Fahrenheit assigns those familiar reference points 32 degrees and 212 degrees. Because 100 Celsius intervals span the same range as 180 Fahrenheit intervals, a Celsius degree is 1.8 times the size of a Fahrenheit degree. Converting Celsius to Fahrenheit therefore multiplies by nine fifths and adds 32. The reverse subtracts 32 and multiplies by five ninths. Kelvin starts at absolute zero, the theoretical lower limit of thermal energy. A kelvin has the same interval size as a Celsius degree, so conversion only changes the origin: add 273.15 to Celsius to obtain Kelvin. Rankine also begins at absolute zero, but each interval matches a Fahrenheit degree. Kelvin multiplied by nine fifths gives Rankine.
