About the meter converter
The meter is the base unit of length in the International System of Units. It provides the reference for metric distances from millimeters used in manufacturing to kilometers used for roads and travel. This meter converter also includes inches, feet, yards, and miles so values can move directly between metric and imperial conventions without separate calculations.
Every calculation passes through meters as a common base. A kilometer equals 1,000 meters, a centimeter equals 0.01 meter, and a millimeter equals 0.001 meter. International definitions make the imperial relationships exact: one inch equals 0.0254 meter, one foot equals 0.3048 meter, one yard equals 0.9144 meter, and one mile equals 1,609.344 meters. The calculator multiplies the input by the source unit's meter factor and divides by the destination unit's factor.
This approach works in either direction and between any two listed units. You can convert kilometers straight to feet, inches to centimeters, miles to yards, or simply meters to another length. Switching the same unit into both selectors returns the original value, which can be useful for checking entered data. Results retain useful decimal precision, but you should round according to the precision of the original measurement rather than treating every displayed digit as measured accuracy.
Length conversion appears in construction plans, product dimensions, athletic distances, maps, travel itineraries, classroom problems, and scientific observations. A builder may need feet from metric drawings, a traveler may compare kilometers and miles, and a designer may translate millimeters into inches. Using exact factors avoids the accumulating errors that can occur when several rounded conversions are chained together.
Only nonnegative values are accepted because this page treats the input as a physical length or distance. A signed coordinate or displacement can still be converted by converting its magnitude and retaining the direction separately. For surveying, machining, regulated trade, or safety-critical design, account for tolerances, significant figures, and the standard required by the project. The numerical conversion is exact where unit definitions are exact, but it cannot improve the quality of the source measurement.

Meter converter FAQ
How many feet are in one meter?
One meter is approximately 3.280839895 feet. The calculator derives this from the exact definition that one foot equals 0.3048 meter.
How many inches are in one meter?
One meter is approximately 39.37007874 inches. This follows from the exact 0.0254-meter definition of an inch.
Can I convert units without starting in meters?
Yes, any listed source unit can be converted directly to any listed destination unit. Meters are used internally as the common base.
Why are some results long decimals?
Metric and imperial unit ratios do not always produce terminating decimals for the chosen direction. Round the displayed result to the precision appropriate for your original measurement.
Are these factors exact?
The listed metric scaling and modern international inch, foot, yard, and mile definitions are exact. Real-world measured values can still have instrument and observation uncertainty.
