A measurement converter translates a quantity from one unit into another without changing the physical amount it represents. This calculator covers five everyday categories: length, weight, volume, temperature, and time. It includes widely used metric units alongside familiar US and imperial units, making it useful when a drawing, recipe, shipment, trip plan, or scientific note uses a different system from the one you need. Most conversions use a common base unit. For example, every length value is first represented in meters and then divided by the factor for the destination unit. The exact international definitions are used where available: one inch is 0.0254 meter, one foot is 0.3048 meter, one pound is 0.45359237 kilogram, and one US gallon is 3.785411784 liters. Time conversions use seconds as their base. These fixed relationships make forward and reverse conversions consistent. Temperature needs a different method because its scales have different zero points as well as different interval sizes. Celsius is used as the intermediate scale. Fahrenheit values are shifted by 32 and scaled by five ninths, while kelvin values are shifted by 273.15. As a result, temperature cannot be converted by a simple multiplication factor in the same way as distance or mass. Select the category before choosing units because each category describes a different physical dimension. A meter cannot meaningfully become a kilogram, and a liter cannot become an hour. Within a category, you can choose the same unit on both sides to confirm a value or switch the direction to reverse a calculation.
