About converting pounds of force to PSI
Pounds-force and pounds per square inch describe related but different physical quantities. Pounds-force, written lbf, measures total force. PSI measures pressure, which is force distributed over an area. A force value alone cannot determine pressure because the same force produces different pressures when spread over different areas. This calculator therefore asks for both the applied force and the loaded area in square inches.
The formula is pressure equals force divided by area. When force is entered in pounds-force and area is entered in square inches, the quotient is pounds-force per square inch, commonly abbreviated PSI. For example, 1,000 lbf distributed over 10 square inches produces 100 psi. If the same force acts over only 2 square inches, the pressure rises to 500 psi. A smaller contact area concentrates force and creates greater pressure.
Area must be greater than zero. For a rectangular surface, multiply length by width when both dimensions are measured in inches. For a circular piston face, first calculate its area as pi multiplied by the radius squared, using inches for the radius. Do not enter a diameter directly as though it were an area. Irregular contact surfaces may require a measured or estimated effective area, and that assumption can significantly affect the result.

In a hydraulic cylinder, fluid pressure acting across piston area produces force, so the same equation can be rearranged to find force or area.
