The hour converter uses seconds as its internal reference. It multiplies the entered value by the number of seconds in the source unit and divides by the number of seconds in the destination unit. Thus 2.5 hours becomes 9,000 seconds and then 150 minutes. Three days becomes 259,200 seconds and then 72 hours. Using one common reference avoids separate formulas for every possible pair and keeps reverse conversions consistent. Months and years need an explicit convention because calendar months have different lengths and leap years add a day. This calculator uses the average Gregorian year of 365.25 days and the average month of one twelfth of that year, or 30.4375 days. Those averages are useful for estimating long durations, financial intervals, and project timelines, but they do not replace calendar-aware date arithmetic. To determine the exact duration between two dates, use actual calendar dates and account for month lengths, leap years, and time zones. Decimal hours are common in payroll and time tracking. A value such as 7.5 hours means seven hours and half of another hour, so it equals seven hours 30 minutes, not seven hours five minutes. Multiply the decimal portion by 60 to obtain minutes. Likewise, 2 hours 15 minutes becomes 2.25 decimal hours because 15 divided by 60 is 0.25. Keeping this distinction clear prevents common billing and scheduling mistakes. Use smaller units when you need more detailed whole numbers and larger units when you want a compact summary. Seconds suit short events, minutes suit meetings, hours suit work shifts, and days or weeks suit projects. Retain unrounded values through intermediate calculations and round only the final result.
