About converting Celsius temperatures
The Celsius scale is a metric temperature scale used for weather, cooking, science, medicine, and daily measurements throughout most of the world. At standard atmospheric pressure, pure water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius and boils at 100 degrees Celsius. Converting a Celsius reading makes it possible to compare that temperature with Fahrenheit, Kelvin, or Rankine values used in other regions and technical disciplines.
To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply the Celsius value by 9, divide by 5, and add 32. This offset is necessary because the scales use different zero points as well as differently sized degrees. Zero degrees Celsius equals 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and 100 degrees Celsius equals 212 degrees Fahrenheit. A change of one Celsius degree corresponds to a change of 1.8 Fahrenheit degrees.
Kelvin uses the same interval size as Celsius but begins at absolute zero. Add exactly 273.15 to a Celsius value to obtain kelvins. Kelvin values are written without a degree symbol. Zero Celsius is 273.15 K, while absolute zero is -273.15 degrees Celsius or 0 K. Temperatures below absolute zero are not valid on the ordinary thermodynamic scale, so this calculator rejects values below that physical limit.
Rankine is an absolute temperature scale that uses Fahrenheit-sized intervals. Convert Celsius to Rankine by first adding 273.15 and then multiplying by 9 divided by 5. Zero Celsius is 491.67 degrees Rankine, and absolute zero is 0 degrees Rankine. Rankine is encountered mainly in some engineering calculations involving thermodynamics, especially where customary units are used.
