About converting CCF to therms

CCF measures gas volume, while a therm measures energy. One CCF means one hundred cubic feet of gas, and one therm equals 100,000 British thermal units. The energy in a given volume of natural gas depends on its heat content, commonly reported in BTU per cubic foot. This calculator combines the measured volume with that heat-content value instead of assuming that every CCF contains exactly one therm. The calculation first multiplies CCF by 100 to obtain cubic feet. It then multiplies cubic feet by the entered BTU per cubic foot to obtain total BTU. Dividing that total by 100,000 gives therms. The equivalent shortcut is therms equals CCF multiplied by BTU per cubic foot and divided by 1,000. With the default heat content of 1,037 BTU per cubic foot, 10 CCF produces 10.37 therms. Natural gas composition varies by source and distribution system, so its heating value can change over time. A value near 1,000 BTU per cubic foot is convenient for rough estimates, but the billing factor on a utility statement is better for checking an actual charge. Some bills list a therm factor, pressure factor, temperature factor, or total heat content rather than BTU per cubic foot. Use the factor in the same units requested by the calculator, and do not mix higher-heating-value and lower-heating-value specifications. The calculator also displays total BTU and an energy equivalent in kilowatt-hours. The kilowatt-hour figure uses approximately 3,412.141633 BTU per kWh and is useful for comparing energy quantities, but it does not compare appliance operating costs or efficiencies by itself. A gas furnace and electric heater can deliver different useful heat from the same nominal energy input because their efficiencies differ. Utility billing can include taxes, delivery fees, fixed service charges, seasonal rates, and meter corrections that this conversion does not model. Treat the result as an energy-unit conversion rather than a prediction of the final bill.
