Frequently asked questions
Is one CCF always equal to one therm?
No, CCF measures volume and therms measure energy. They are close to equal only when gas contains about 1,000 BTU per cubic foot.
What heat-content value should I enter?
Use the BTU per cubic foot value supplied by your utility whenever possible. The default 1,037 value is a representative estimate, not a universal billing factor.
How is the therm result calculated?
The CCF value is multiplied by the BTU per cubic foot and divided by 1,000. This accounts for 100 cubic feet per CCF and 100,000 BTU per therm.
Can this calculator predict my gas bill?
It can estimate the energy quantity used for part of a bill. Rates, delivery charges, taxes, and utility correction factors must be applied separately.
Why show kilowatt-hours for natural gas?
Kilowatt-hours provide another way to express the same energy quantity. The value supports energy comparisons but does not account for equipment efficiency or pricing.
